Blacks Harbour, NB – Its commitment to supporting families and building stronger communities has helped Cooke Aquaculture earn recognition as one of Atlantic Canada’s Top Employers for 2024.
“Employers in Atlantic Canada recognize that their employees are keen to make a difference in the local community,” says Kristina Leung, managing editor at Mediacorp, organizers of the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers competition.
“This year’s winning employers understand that it’s not just about making charitable donations. It’s about providing benefits like paid time off so employees can volunteer with local charitable groups without having to worry about losing income or precious vacation time. In many cases, employers are matching these volunteer hours with donations, which is an effective way to encourage volunteerism.”
Cooke has over 2,300 employees in dozens of roles and locations across the Atlantic provinces – from southwest New Brunswick, in Charlottetown, PEI, throughout Nova Scotia and on the south coast of Newfoundland.
“Cooke’s core purpose is: To cultivate the ocean with care, nourish the world, provide for our families, and build stronger communities,” said Glenn Cooke, CEO of Cooke Aquaculture.
Cooke empowers its employees to champion causes close to their hearts. From mentoring in local schools to shoreline cleanups and participation in charitable events like the Big Bike for Heart & Stroke, the navy-blue Team Cooke t-shirts are a familiar sight in communities where the company operates.
The company and its employees are long-time supporters of Charlotte County Cancer in New Brunswick and the IWK Foundation in Nova Scotia. In Newfoundland, the team at Cooke’s Swanger Cove Hatchery supports their local cancer benefit group by donating proceeds from recycled cans and bottles. They also raise funds by selling off the facility’s used pallets and barrels, which are eagerly repurposed by community members.
“The strength of our family company is our people, and Atlantic Canadians are known for their kindness, hard-work and pride in their communities,” says Cooke.
Founded in 1985 in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick, Cooke Aquaculture is a global seafood leader shipping products to customers worldwide. In addition to freshwater hatchery, saltwater salmon farming, vessel crew, trucking and processing occupations, the company also employs people in all the administrative and support fields that any large company requires. That includes finance and accounting, human resources, IT, sales and marketing, treasury, legal and other professional occupations.
